Crèches and Community Gardens

Creche gardenProject Gateway is currently working with 15+ crèches in and around Pietermaritzburg.  Initially providing food vouchers or food parcels when requested,  Project Gateway then assists each  crèche to start a community garden so that they can provide their own food for the children.

Project Gateway supplies the seeds, gives assistance with the digging and planting if required, and provides advice on how to plant and nurture the vegetables.

Thanks to funding from the UK, Project Gateway is also able to provide the creches with an Early Childhood Development programme in conjunction with an organisation called Singakwenza. Working with crèche leaders, they help them to make their crèches into educational facilities rather than a babysitting service, and teach them how to educate the children using toys and teaching materials made from household packaging.
